When I decided to have a quiet weekend of vegging out and relaxing, the new VUDU box seemed like the perfect companion. As an experiment, I decided to take the box home and blindly try to set up the system without any instructions or prior knowledge of the product. The first thing I noticed was that the box and remote itself had a sleek and simple design, which didn’t appear clunky or obvious in addition to the rest of my home theater system. The small box fit perfectly into place on top of my other components. The rest of the set-up was simple. An Ethernet cable to my modem, HDMI cable to the television, and a power cord. The VUDU box did everything else. All I had to do was turn it on.

Once it had set itself up, the main menu appeared on my screen and I was ready to view over 6,000 titles and television series. I was surprised by how quickly I was able to master the VUDU remote and menu navigation. The simple design, which includes less than five buttons and a scroll wheel, made navigating the menus simple. Not being the most tech savvy individual, I found that this interface was really designed to be as simple and practical for the user as possible. I think that any family member could easily master this system with ease.

I was doubly impressed with the title selections and variety. Having such a vast selection not only offered any movie or television series I could think of, it also offered many I would not have found in a conventional video store. The main menu offered a quick offering of new and top releases, while sub menus offered several options in search and filtering options. I also appreciated the expanded filtering options available such as ‘by star-rating’ and ‘most-viewed’. Best of all, was the ability to watch a full length preview of any movie I was unsure about. This really enhanced my selection process beyond the simple ‘synopsis’ usually offered on a back cover!

As for the picture quality and download speed, I didn’t experience any problems. The HD quality was fantastic and I experienced zero picture freezes or errors. The movies played instantaneously and without any loading or buffering syncs, and the Dolby 5.1 surround sound was first-rate. You can find complete specs here.

VUDU boxes are exceptionally priced starting at $299.00 and the account process is customizable and contract free. All accounts are pre-paid, with movie rentals and purchases simply deducted from your prepaid account balance. There are no monthly charges, memberships, or statements to worry about.

Overall, I found having a virtual video rental store in my home well worth it. Having thousands more titles than any video store could possible ever offer, at the touch of a button- was convenient, fun, and satisfying. Thanks to VUDU, my weekend of being a couch potato and vegging out was a complete success!
